It was very shiny in Carnalea and Scrabo karate clubs this week following the students’ successes at the recent Dublin International Karate Tournament, held in the National Basketball Arena. Despite top competition from all around the UK, local students came home with a very handsome total of twenty six medals: four gold, ten silver and twelve bronze.
The top team this year in kumite was the trio of Rachael Fleming, Lucy Ouldfield and Amy Adair, going one better than last year and this time becoming the champions. In addition Lucy with Rachael and ably assisted by Jessica Palmer collected bronze in the girls team kata event.
The medals did not stop there with the girls; Lucy individually collected another two medals, silver in kata and bronze in individual kumite and Amy collected silver in her individual kumite.
Another girl who is always in the medals did once again not disappoint. Levi Kane collected the senior ladies Wado-Ryu kata title to add to her growing collection.
The boys team of Jordan Lewis, Jacq Watton and Adam Patterson lifted silver in the team kumite with Jordan, Dean Miller and Jacq’s brother Louis collecting silver in their team kata event. Dean added a silver in his individual kumite, Louis a silver in his individual kata and Jacq a bronze in his individual kumite.
The junior boys kumite team of Luke Allen, Darren Calvert and Ben McIlroy collected a well deserved bronze, with Luke adding silver in his individual kumite and both Darren and Ben, along with Ben Rylance all collecting another bronze each in their individual kumite.
Coach Kevin Lewis was delighted with the team’s performance and commented “This is always a really tough, hard hitting competition. However this year our squad excelled and it bodes well for our junior team selections for this year’s IKU European Junior Championships.”
