Last weekend at the Dublin International Karate tournament in the National Basketball Arena, Dublin the best International Karate Union students from across Ireland and England took part in a fantastic day of competition. Karate students from Scrabo Karate Club and Carnalea Karate Club were in action and once again in the medals. Gold went to Levi Kane in the All-Styles Senior Ladies kata division. It has been suggested that it takes at least four years for an adult to go from beginner to black belt in karate provided they are training at least three times a week. At the recent Northern Ireland Karate Championships which were held in QUB PEC in Belfast karate students from the Scrabo club in Ards and the Carnalea and Aurora clubs in Bangor came away with a Christmas sack of medals. The top performer of the squad was Rachael Fleming from Bangor who gave fantastic performances in both her individual kumite and kata winning them both for the second year in a row. She was closely followed in results by her IKU European Championships team-mate, Craig Brashaw from Newtownards who won his kata and somehow ended up with silver in the kumite final after fighting up a weight and age category. Over five hundred top karate athletes from across Europe recently competed in the IKU Children and Junior European Karate Championships. The three day event took place in the London Docklands and was non-stop action from the Friday morning until the senior finals on the Sunday afternoon. The Mizukara Karate clubs which are based in Ards and Bangor were delighted to have nine members selected for the Northern Ireland squad. The squad not only competed with the best in Europe but returned home with a bag full of medals. It was very shiny in Carnalea and Scrabo karate clubs this week following the students’ successes at the recent Dublin International Karate Tournament, held in the National Basketball Arena. Despite top competition from all around the UK, local students came home with a very handsome total of twenty six medals: four gold, ten silver and twelve bronze. The top team this year in kumite was the trio of Rachael Fleming, Lucy Ouldfield and Amy Adair, going one better than last year and this time becoming the champions. Winning one Northern Ireland title in any sport is a great achievement, however winning four Northern Ireland titles at one championship is pretty special. That’s exactly what Bangor girl Rachael Fleming who attends Glenlola Collegiate achieved at the recent championships held in Lough Moss Leisure Centre, Carryduff. Some seven hundred competitors competed in individual kata, individual kumite and team events for the same disciplines and Rachel, entered in each of them, collected gold in them all!
